...that the worst thing to work on is not an old, neglected car, but an old, neglected car with a piss poor paint job. Spent the whole hour and I still can’t get one panel to be smooth because of all the damn overspray.

Spent the whole time cringing how there’s clearcoat on ALL the surrounding parts that wasn’t supposed to be painted.

Did you try claying the paint before polishing?

If the overspray paint is recent then you should be able to get away with some isopropyl alcohol, wipe on, wipe in and wipe off.

If worst comes to the worst, get some wet’n’dry sand paper 2000 grit should do, soak it in some warm water, wrap it round a squared off block and then going in one direction back and forward using a shampoo/water mixture as a lubricant. Don’t panic too much about going through the clearcote, the paint and clearcote are usually around 130 microns thick, the clearcote makes up half of that. In a typical paint correction stage you will only remove up to about 8 microns.

If you want some peace of mind. See if you can borrow a PDG (paint depth gauge), test it on a panel which will give you the paint and clearcote depth, then test on the inside of the door, this area doesn’t get clearcote and it’s depth will show you how deep the paint is. Subtract this number from the first test and that will give you an idea of how much clearcote you have to play with.

Yeah, claying is always my first step.

Guess part of my problem is I don’t have a polisher (no electrical outlet to plug it in) and I didn’t really prep it well. Just took it to the local car wash and gave it a once through instead of my usual hand wash. First sign was my clay bar kept turning brownish yellow with all the contaminants. It was just a trial run on one panel as I was bored last night. Maybe I should try again in a week or two when I might have access to a DA.

But it was the clear coat on the chrome and plastic parts that drove me nuts...

If you can give her another wash, use a water based degreaser to help break the dirt up, then attack with some tar remover, wash down and then try a fallout remover. This will remove a hell of a lot of contamination, before you clay bar or clay block/towel/mitt.

I polish by hand, it’s harder going but I like the feel and can gauge how much pressure and see better where needs more attention.

Remember the P’s.

Proper Preparation Prevents Pisspoor Performance. ;)

Yeah I was just lazy... had some free points at the gas station.

I mean I wouldn’t take it to a gas station usually, we have a free indoor car wash in the parking lot. :P

Lol.

I’ve not long finished doing my neighbours car. Another neighbour scraped the side of her car and she asked if I could take a look, removed the scuff and washed and sealed the car.
